KUALA LUMPUR – The best step to ‘cleanse’ UMNO is to ‘rest’ the party in the 15th General Election (GE15).

The Vice President of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad claimed, by not giving the party a mandate to govern the country, it could at least be a period for the ‘cleansing’ of the party.

“They (UMNO) need to be given the opportunity to not have any power in GE15 so that the ‘cleansing’ can be carried out.

“In the last election, the people had actually ‘rested’ UMNO, but due to the Sheraton move, UMNO came back through the ‘back door’,” he told Sinar Harian during the Pakatan Harapan (PH) Public Talk program of the Setiawangsa Parliament at Rampai Business Park. near here, on Sunday.

Also present in the program were PH candidate for Subang Parliament, Wong Chen and former Member of Parliament for Lumut, Mohamad Imran Abd Hamid.

Previously, Khairy Jamaluddin who is also the BN candidate for the Sungai Buloh Parliament said in a speech that he would do a ‘cleansing’ in the party and ensure the legitimacy of UMNO Vice President, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as Prime Minister.

He explained that although UMNO has sentimental value to the Malay community, the party is seen to have ‘lost its way’ and needs to return to its roots.

Meanwhile, Nik Nazmi when asked about whether PH will join with UMNO if the party is successfully purged, he replied that the government that will be formed will only involve that coalition.

“We (PH) are campaigning in this election for us (PH) to win the majority,” he added.
