GE15: The government sets up a ‘task force’ to deal with fake news

BHARU CITY: Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has established a ‘task force’ in an effort to deal with the spread of fake news throughout the 15th General Election (GE15).

The Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Tan Sri Annuar Musa said, the team was established to take immediate action without having to wait for a report from any party.

According to him, the ministry has approved the purchase of devices for the use of more than 100 members of the team to block any spread of fake news effective today.

“The ‘task force’ team that we have formed will monitor as much as possible and all the time so that if there is fake news, we can delete and remove it immediately without having to wait for a report.

“Waiting for the report and investigating is not appropriate during this election because if the candidate is the victim (of fake news), then the candidate will be persecuted. Therefore, this ‘task force’ is allowed to take immediate action,” he said at a press conference after officiating the Malaysian Family Esports Community Carnival @Ketereh at the Kelantan Poverty Foundation (YKK) Complex, Melor here today.

Annuar said, the public is reminded to make an immediate report to MCMC if they see any slanderous and false news broadcasts on social media.

“The spread of this fake news can have a negative effect on the public, and if left unchecked, it can put pressure on people to commit suicide,” he said. – MESSENGER
