Indonesia declared three new autonomous regions in Papua

JAKARTA: Indonesian Interior Minister, Tito Karnavian, declared the establishment of three new autonomous regions (DOB) in Papua in an inauguration ceremony held in Jakarta today.

Tito representing the President, Joko Widodo, officiated the establishment of the three regions in question namely South Papua, Central Papua and Papua Pegunungan and appointed acting Governors for each of these regions.

He also recited the history of the formation of the three new regions starting from community aspirations to the preparation of some regulations.

Tito and some representatives then hit the Tifa musical instrument as a symbol of the inauguration of the three new regions.

The division of three new regions in Papua was agreed by the House of Representatives (DPR) and the government following the approval of three laws related to the Southern Papua, Central Papua and Papua Mountain Regions at the end of June.

The addition of three DOBs in Papua makes Indonesia now have 37 provinces compared to the previous 35.

The Southern Papua region includes Boven Digoel, Mappi and Asmat with Marauke as its capital.

The Central Papua region includes Nabire as its capital in addition to Puncak Jaya, Paniai, Mimika, Puncak, Dogiyai, Intan Jaya, and Deiyai.

While the Papua Mountains include the Star Mountains, Yahukimo, Tolikara, Mamberamo Tengah, Yalimo, Lanny Jaya, and Nduga with Jayawijaya chosen as the capital.

To fill government vacancies, the government appointed three acting governors in the three new regions before the final governor is determined in the 2024 election.-AGENCIES
