SEPANG – A man was willing to use his wife’s Toyota Vellfire to run an illegal rental car or ‘worm’ activity to attract tourists at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA 2), here, before being arrested on Wednesday.

Director of the Selangor Road Transport Department (JPJ), Datuk Khairul Khar Yahya said that the ‘caterpillar’ activity was detected as a result of spying and monitoring by his side.

“The Toyota Vellfire driven by a 42-year-old man was arrested while carrying three Japanese passengers to the capital.

“It is believed that the driver used persuasion and pleading tactics before charging passengers a fare of RM180,” he told Sinar Harian on Friday.

He said that the preliminary investigation found that the vehicle belonged to the wife of the driver involved and claimed that the activities were carried out to find side income.

He said the case was investigated under Section 205(1) of the Land Public Transport Act 2010 which provides for a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment for a period not exceeding five years or both if convicted.

“Anyone who conspires to do this ‘caterpillar’ activity can also be prosecuted according to Section 243(1) under the same act,” he said.

He added that the public is advised to use valid transport services either through the service counters provided at KLIA and KLIA 2 or make reservations through the e-hailing application.

“This enforcement will be implemented continuously from time to time and strict action will be taken against drivers and vehicle owners who offer unlicensed or illegal rental car services,” he stressed.
